Low Fat Diets - The problem of low fat diets
You probably came across many different weight loss diets and theories which do not only claim to be completely different than all other diets but often even seem to make sense. Low fat diet is also one of those weight loss diets which seems “logical” when hearing or reading about it. After all, food high in fats are high in calorie content as well and restriction of such food should work, right? Not exactly.
Reducing consumption of foods high in fats to the minimum is essential for successful weight loss as well as maintenance of a healthy body weight but your “job” is far from over. The truth is that cutting down foods high in fats is not enough to lose excess pounds and for many people low fat diet did not work on long term, while some even gained additional pounds despite dieting. The main reason why low fat diets do not always work is the ignorance to calories obtained through other foods, while equal or increased amount of calories obtained even low fat sources can lead to weight gain as well. Food high in fats should be avoided but it is highly important not to replace them with foods high in sugar and carbohydrates.
Fats may be often closely associated with overweight and obesity but they cannot or should not be completely removed from the diet. Vitamins A, D, E and K can be digested and absorbed only in conjunction with fats. In addition fats are also source of essential fatty acids of which are best know Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.
